1) First motorsport memory?
So, it’s probably Nascar, something with Jimmie Johnson or something, I had LJ friends and SBNation friends that were into motorsport and I always just sort of shrugged it off.
2) First race/event you watched?
The Korean GP. I stayed up until 3am to watch it with my two friends. We were very drunk and we’d just watched Pacific Rim and it was awesome
3) First season you watched?
4) First favourite driver/rider? Are they still your favourite?
Kimi Raikkonen. I basically went on twitter where I have a ton of hockey followers and started yelling about F1, and they were mostly like DO NOT BE A VETTEL FAN. HERE IS A SILLY FINN YOU WILL ENJOY. And what do you know, I was sold. Yes, he’s still my favorite.
5) First favourite team? Still your favourite?
Lotus F1, but not anymore - now my favorite is Red Bull, because I do very much like Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel doesn’t hurt. My favorite back of the pack team will be Force India, because I really like Hulk and I have a feeling they’re also going to sign Checo, and that’ll be great.
6) First race/event you went to and when? If you haven’t been, which would you like to be your first?
I went to the USGP this year, in November, and it was UNBELIEVABLEEEEE
7) First thing that attracted you to the sport?
The movie Rush. I came out of it and was like IS F1 LIKE THIS TODAY, TOO???? I DID NOT KNOW THAT MOTORSPORT WAS A HUGE THING OUTSIDE NASCAR. I really didn’t. So I went home and started reading and I regret nothing.
8) First driver/rider you met? If none, who would you like to meet?
Uh, I got to see a lot of them up close at the USGP! But I think I’d like to meet Kimi in person. I sort of like the not-very-chatty finn thing.
9) First driver/rider/team you didn’t like? Still not like them?
I have an icky feeling about Alonso and Ferrari. Which is sad because I have a coworker from Spain who just moved here, someone I can actually talk to about F1! and he’s a huge Alonso fan! And therefore Ferrari! And I just ennnnhhghhh Ferrari gives me a bad feeling. No me gusta.
10) First time you realised you were addicted to racing?
Drunk watching the Korean GP. I was so happy. The engine noises made me feel so peaceful and satisfied. Everything about this sport (ok, most things) is awesome.
Named after the first self-identified non-white player in the National Hockey League, The Larry Kwong Project is an initiative dedicated to providing information, and promoting dialogue, about race issues in hockey at all levels.
Or - it will be. Welcome to the nascence of The Larry Kwong Project. Born out of frustration from having dozens of disparate, disjointed conversations about half of one issue and certain limited aspects of another, the aim of The Larry Kwong Project is not to displace or to supplant the work of those already discussing race issues in hockey, but to provide a more concrete, coherent platform for discussion.
The project will proceed in three parts: the first focused on fact-gathering and data presentation, the second providing a historical perspective, and the third - building on the empirical facts and the context of the past - to produce informed, engaging, well-rounded commentary.
As we begin, we’d like your thoughts and feedback. What would you like to see discussed? What would be useful to you, as a hockey fan (or just a fan of critical thinking) in considering race issues in hockey? What don’t you understand? Where could we try to shed some light? Comments & suggestions are all welcome.
If you’re interested in participating in The Larry Kwong Project - as a researcher, writer, ideas person, or whatever role you’d like to fill - drop a note @thekwongproject or get in touch via thekwongproject [at] gmail [dot] com. Again, all are welcome.
